Gifted Education
Instructor: Ms. Snyder
Welcome to the Gifted Education page!  My name is Carol Snyder, and I am the gifted education facilitator for Lewis-Palmer Middle School.  I coordinate the programming and Advanced Learning Plans (ALPs) for the gifted students at Lewis-Palmer Middle School.  I also teach an elective course called "Opportunities and Challenges" at all grade levels.

Honors Classes at High School
Honors courses at LPHS or PRHS stress academic excellence and rigor. Courses are designed to purposefully teach in-depth content in an interactive classroom environment. Honors courses extend the ideas and content of the required standards-based curriculum by differentiating content, process, and product expectations and/or include a technology component that goes beyond that which would normally be done in the non-Honors course of a similar name. Course content integrates information from other disciplines, features topics dealing with world cultures and the humanities, emphasizes critical thinking, student-directed learning, interpersonal skills, and includes a variety of instructional strategies. Extensive reading and writing is incorporated in all Honors courses at PRHS or LPHS. Honors Courses are NOT weighted, although colleges still consider them as advanced academics.

There are two honors classes available for freshmen:  Honors English and Honors Civics.

The Honors Program Agreement must be signed for a student to sign up for the honors program.  The form may be picked up from Ms. Snyder in room 712 or downloaded from this web site (see the right side of this page).  Student and parent signatures are required.  You must bring the form with you to register at the high school with your other paperwork.

Please Note: Enrollment into Honors Classes is based space-availability.   You do not have to be part of the Gifted Ed program to take an Honors Class.

Summer Camp for Gifted Students

From the Institute for Educational Advancement

IEA is a national, independent non-profit that matches highly gifted children with customized educational programs designed to serve their complex intellectual, emotional, spiritual and physical needs. One of our longest standing and strongest programs is our week-long, residential summer camp, Yunasa.

Yunasa, the Lakota word meaning balance, is a weeklong camp for highly gifted youth. This weeklong camp is a place where gifted and highly gifted youth feel a sense of acceptance and community they rarely find elsewhere. Yunasa uniquely focuses on teaching campers how to integrate every aspect of themselves and is devoted to reminding bright young people that they are more than just intellect. Yunasa campers are highly gifted individuals between the ages of 10 and 14 who are performing at the middle school level or above, are ready to explore the natural environment, gain new confidence and skills, meet new friends, and be challenged to achieve their personal best. In addition to the camp coordinators and camp counselors, Yunasa faculty includes IEA's Senior Fellows, nationally recognized experts in the field of gifted education.

For the first time in 2012, we are excited to offer Yunasa West in Sedalia, Colorado!  Yunasa West has the same Yunasa Spirit – now, with a distinctive Western Flair!  Click here for more information about Yunasa West on our webpage, and to download our application. Yunasa West will be held at YMCA Camp Shady Brook from June 10 to 17, 2012. The early application deadline is March 2, 2012 – apply by the early deadline and save $100 from tuition! The final deadline application deadline is April 2, 2012. Limited financial aid is available. Do let me know if you have any inquiries concerning this fun and life-changing summer camp experience!
